Chapter 14. Retreat!

After catching their breath, the party forged ahead into the next room. Filled with Kobolds, this room also sported a sludge filled pit, but also held two raised platforms on the east end. A group of Kobolds was clustered on the platform, throwing a large rock on a rope back and forth. When the group entered, the Kobolds flung the stone at the group. The party spread out and attacked, with Cale and Astronom jumping to the top of the platform and engaging the Kobolds face to face. Balasar found himself stuck to the ground by a gluey substance flung by a Kobold, and Sabi and Ezarael took up guarding positions around him. Seeing the damage the rope was inflicting, Sabi leaped onto a coffin and used her draconic breath to try and incinerate it. Unfortunatly, the rope was made of sturdier material and survived the incineration, only to be split by a pair of Sabi's arrows. Without the threat of the rope, Sabi and Ezarael moved to join the fray on the platforms.

Unfortunately, the fight on the east end of the room was rapidly deteriorating. Astronom had leapt over the double-doors... and right into a pair of Guard Drakes, who immediately attacked. While Astronom managed to take down a Kobold, the Guard Drakes were more than a match for him, and soon he was mortally wounded. After downing the dragonborn, the Guard Drakes split up, with one heading up the stairs towards Cale, and another going through the door towards Sabi and Balasar, who remained on the ground level. Cale managed to quickly down the Guard Drake that had headed after him, and with an impressive leap, fell back to ground level and engaged the remaining Guard Drake.

After dispatching the final Guard Drake and mopping up the remaining Kobolds, the party took a moment to decide what to do with Astronom's corpse. The wizard finally decided to head back to town and have the dragonborn revived, and left the Hall. Resting for a short while, the party moved on into the next room.

Upon entering the room, a large rock fell from a platform and began rolling around the room. The party began fighting the Kobolds, but it soon became clear that this fight would be much harder. While the party was able to dispatch some of the Kobolds easily, the toll soon caught up with them, and it wasn't long before Cale and Sabi fell in battle. Ezarael returned just in time to help Balasar fight off a pair of Kobolds. Summing up the situation, Balasar and Ezarael rescued the bodies of their fallen foes, with Ezarael falling in the process. Beating a hasty retreat, Balasar returned back to Fallcrest, seeking assistance to have the team of heroes healed...
