Chapter 24. Exploring Burden's Peak

Inside the city, the group began exploring. The rules of the city were simple- if you steal, you lost a hand; if you lied, you lost a tongue; and if you attacked a guard or a noble, you lost... well, your life. Dorina led the city to a map maker, inquiring about the symbol, but only receiving evasive answers and flat out refusals to help. The mapmaker did suggest he would trade information- if Dorina brought a map of the underground sewers, he would be willing to tell her what he knew. From there, the party split up, heading their separate ways. Dorina, guarded by Ibas, visited the local taverns in search of more information, but found little. Ortus investigated the Mage's guild, learning of the library inside, and was given a simple task to join the Guild- gather certain needed ingredients. Bastious visited the temple of Kord, meeting a young cleric and sparring briefly with him, learning that people in the city were acting strangely, at least briefly. Sabi and Aiden visited the temple of the Raven Queen, and also learned that people in the town were acting strangely.

Eventually, though, the day grew to an end, and the group met back at the map maker. Further questioning of the merchant revealed nothing, so the group headed for an inn to spend the night. On their way, they discovered that the [placeholder] was holding a contest, with the reward of free food and lodging for a week. The party headed for that inn and joined the contest, which turned out to be a performance contest, judging who could provide the best performance in a series of improvisational acts. Though some of the group did better than others, in the end one of them won the contest and they all got a week free. The group wound down for the night- a few games of Liar's dice, and some rather heavy drinking, and then the group headed off (or was carried off) to bed.

The next morning Dorina woke to a noise outside her room. Dorina looked outside, and found a message to stop poking around- along with a heart nailed to her door...
